CCTV Maintenance Guide — Keep Your System Working for 5+ Years

CCTV is one of those systems where things slowly degrade for months before you notice — until the day you actually need footage and find a broken camera or a dead HDD. A small monthly routine prevents that.

What actually breaks in CCTV systems

Most failures fall into one of these:

1. Camera lens fogging / spider webs (free fix)
2. HDD wear-out after 3 years (₹3,500–₹6,000 replacement)
3. Power supply failure (₹600–₹2,000)
4. BNC connector corrosion at outdoor cameras (free fix)
5. Mobile app stops working after firmware update or password reset
6. Cable rodent damage (₹400–₹1,500 per camera)

Monthly checks (10 minutes)

- [ ] Open the mobile app, verify every camera shows live view
- [ ] Scrub through last night's recording for one outdoor camera
- [ ] Check the recorder's health page for HDD errors
- [ ] Look at outdoor camera lenses for spider webs / dust / fog
- [ ] Verify the time on the recorder is correct (after power cuts)

Quarterly checks (30 minutes)

- [ ] Clean every camera lens with a soft microfibre cloth
- [ ] Check every IR LED still glows red in dark
- [ ] Check cable joints in outdoor junction boxes for water / corrosion
- [ ] Verify motion alerts still arrive on your phone
- [ ] Check NVR / DVR power supply temperature
- [ ] Test mobile viewing on a friend's phone too (catches DNS / port issues)

Annual checks (1–2 hours)

- [ ] Run the recorder's full HDD self-test
- [ ] Replace BNC connectors on any flaky cameras
- [ ] Apply firmware updates (DVR/NVR + cameras + app)
- [ ] Re-route any cable that has come loose or sagged
- [ ] Recheck ALL angles — sometimes furniture / vegetation has shifted

When to replace the HDD

Replace the surveillance HDD when any of these is true:
- It's older than 3 years
- The recorder reports any HDD error
- You hear clicking sounds
- Playback stutters or skips
- Recording randomly stops and resumes

A healthy HDD in 24×7 surveillance use lasts 3–4 years. Plan for it.

Signs your CCTV system needs professional attention

- More than one camera is showing "video loss"
- Mobile app keeps disconnecting
- Recording timeline has unexplained gaps
- Night vision worse than 6 months ago
- Recorder is rebooting on its own

AMC vs self-maintenance

For homes with a tech-confident owner, monthly + annual self-maintenance is fine.

AMC makes sense for:
- Shops and offices (you can't afford downtime)
- Societies and gated communities
- Anyone with 8+ cameras
- Anyone who relies on the system for any compliance / insurance

Typical AMC pricing in Pune is ₹3,000–₹8,000/year for small systems, up to ₹35,000/year for societies.

Quick reference: cleaning supplies

Keep these handy:
- Microfibre cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol (small bottle)
- Small soft brush (for IR LED area)
- Compressed air can (for DVR vents)
- Spare BNC connectors (5 pack, ₹150)

FAQs

Q: Will firmware updates break my system?
A: Occasionally yes, which is why we never update everything at once. Update one camera or the recorder, test for a week, then update the rest.

Q: Can I do AMC by myself?
A: For homes, yes. For commercial sites where downtime matters, get a professional AMC.

Q: Do I need to replace cameras every 5 years?
A: Only if image quality has visibly degraded or new compliance requires higher resolution.
