CCTV Buying Guide — A No-Nonsense Checklist (2026)

Most CCTV regret in India comes from skipping basic checks before signing the quote. This is the checklist we wish more customers used.

Before you ask for quotes

- [ ] Walk the property and write down every angle you want covered
- [ ] Decide your retention target — 15, 30, 60 or 90 days
- [ ] Decide indoor vs outdoor cameras for each angle
- [ ] Identify cable routes (existing conduits, false ceiling, walls)
- [ ] Decide who will view the camera (you only, family, committee, manager)

When you read the quote, check…

Camera section
- [ ] Brand and model number listed (not just "HD camera")
- [ ] Resolution (2MP / 4MP / 5MP / 4K)
- [ ] Lens (2.8 mm wide / 3.6 mm / 6 mm)
- [ ] IR night vision range
- [ ] Weather rating (IP66 / IP67 for outdoor)
- [ ] Warranty period

Recorder section
- [ ] Channel count (more than camera count, for future expansion)
- [ ] Resolution support (4K-ready if needed)
- [ ] H.265+ codec
- [ ] HDD model and size (e.g., WD Purple 2 TB)
- [ ] HDMI + VGA output

Cabling & install
- [ ] Cable type (CAT6 / RG-59 + power / Siamese)
- [ ] Conduiting / casing
- [ ] Power supply per channel or central SMPS
- [ ] Total cable length

Setup
- [ ] Mobile app setup included
- [ ] Two user accounts created
- [ ] DDNS / P2P configured
- [ ] On-site walkthrough included
- [ ] GST invoice provided

Red flags to walk away from

- "I'll give you a deal" but no model numbers on the quote
- HDD listed as just "1 TB" with no brand
- "Lifetime warranty" claims
- No GST invoice option
- Pressure to confirm "today only"
- No mention of mobile setup

Pricing intuition

If a 4-camera HD install in Pune is quoted under ₹15,000, something is being cut:
- Probably refurbished HDD
- Probably no-name camera brand
- Probably no conduiting
- Probably no warranty paperwork

A genuine setup with brand cameras, real HDD and proper install lives in ₹16,000–₹28,000 range for 4 cameras.

After installation, verify…

- [ ] All cameras visible in live view
- [ ] Recording is happening (check timeline)
- [ ] Mobile app works on your phone
- [ ] Mobile app works on Wi-Fi and mobile data
- [ ] Night vision is clear at intended distance
- [ ] No HDD errors in recorder logs
- [ ] All paperwork received (invoice, warranty, AMC option)

Maintenance basics

- Every 3 months: clean camera lenses, check HDD health
- Every 6 months: verify mobile app works
- Annually: firmware update, AMC visit

Common buyer mistakes

1. Buying cheapest 8-camera kit instead of 4 good ones — three blurry cameras hurt you when something happens
2. Skipping conduiting — looks ugly, cables get damaged
3. Putting cameras too high — useless for face identification
4. No night-time test — many cameras look great in daylight, terrible at night
5. No mobile app setup before payment

FAQs

Q: Should I buy 4K cameras?
A: Only for gate / number-plate / entry door. Inside the home or shop, 4K is wasted bandwidth.

Q: Is wireless CCTV good enough?
A: For 1–2 indoor cameras, fine. For full property coverage, no — wired is dramatically more reliable.

Q: How long do CCTV systems last?
A: Cameras: 5–7 years. DVR/NVR: 5+ years. HDD: 3–4 years (plan to replace).
